Edward P. Allis

Edward P. Allis (born May 12, 1824 in Cazenovia, New York; died April 1, 1889[1]) was a businessman who co-founded Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company.

Biography

A graduate of Union College, Allis moved to Two Rivers, Wisconsin in 1846.[2] He married Margaret Watson in 1848 and had twelve children. His grandson, William, became a noted physicist. Allis also ran for Governor of Wisconsin in 1877 and 1881.

Allis is buried in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company

After working in leather tanning, banking and real estate, Allis purchased Reliance Works in 1860. He would rename it Allis Company. Allis Company would become the largest industrial employer in Milwaukee before merging with the Fraser and Chalmers Company in 1901 and becoming Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company.
